yes, they are affected by second-hand smoke same as humans. My vet told me dogs and cats can get bronchitis, cancer and other respitory diseases living in homes where people smoke. (i don't smoke in my house).

I know there are studies done but I can't remember the names of the studies or the researchers but I use to work at the local zoo and remember reading the study at work. Yes the second hand smoke affects animals that is why there are no smoking signs next to the animal cages. That does include home pets as well. My dog developed canine asthma shortly after we moved back in with my mom and stepdad who smokes and the vet told me that second hand smoke is dangerous for all living things it just causes more damage to some than others.

The conclusion that second hand smoke is harmful came about through animal research. Rats, pigs, cats, dogs --- they all developed cancer or respiratory problems.. The control groups - animals not subjected to second hand smoke had a far smaller incidence of problems. Birds were hit the hardest and quickest because their lungs are the smallest --- even before the rats.

well i haven't gone into deep study about it but i do know that it effects pets just like it effects humans. Animals can get serious lung problem due to second hand smoke. So if you or anyone around you smokes than i recommend your pet being away for their safety and health. hope this helps!
