Where are you writing from? In Australia, the series was 'The Sullivans', which obviously depicted the fortunes of the Sullivan family (Melbourne) throughout the period of the Second World War.

There was a mini series based on two books by Herman Wouk. The Winds of War, and then War and Rememberance.
Not sure if thats the one you want, but the books were great. Robert Mitchum starred.
