Im going to college now, im a sophmore, and I suddenly have no idea what I want to do with my life. I wanted to be a high school teacher, but I hear the teaching feild is very hard to break into, and pays little (i grew up with not alot of money, and I dont want to live that same life again)

I was also thinking about being a publicist, for like a celebrity, or a movie, music, or televison company (i like current events, and I like entertainment)

I really have no idea, but anything BUT the science feild...that means no doctors, no nursing, none of that. HHELLPPP

One thing is for sure you should do something you really want to if you want to be a high school teacher then go for it, sure as of right now they may not make a whole lot of money but that doesn't mean in the future they won't you see if teachers didn't make enough to live there would be alot of strikes, hey there may be some in the future if they can't afford living, but that would only help the teachers cause then the government would have to give them a raise.

Teachers are the foundation of our lifes they help us reach our goals for the future so we can suceed when we get out school. For every teacher that dies and for every person who doesn't want to be a teacher there is a child out there that will turn dumb and that's sad:(

You shouldn't make a decison right off by what others have to say, sure advice is great but things can change and they probely will soon.I asked a few of my cool teachers in school what they made in a year a few of them simply said it's not a bad living but it would be nice if they made more for what they do, but then my history teacher told us he made around $70,000 a year but lately because there is a Republican in office the yearly salary went down almost $10,000 then he told us that the Republicans really weren't for school funding even though they talk a big game on the matter in their campaning, that's why most teachers are Democrats he said. I really belived the man cause he's 60's and has been around for a while plus he is a smart history teacher plus now that there is a Republican in office I can't help to notice all the teachers being hurt in the funds deparment.:(

If you now have your heart set on doing something in the spot light you should diffintly do that soon so your school credit & time isn't wasted.... but what ever you do make sure it's what you'll enjoy doing for a while but of course you can always switch it up in a few years if you change your mind again, cause college is open to everyone at any age.

***Keep your head high and follow your dreams we only have one shot at life might as well have fun doing it right?!

Think very hard about this. First consider where you want to live. If it is a small town, chances are your ideas regarding work with the media and celebrities is not going to be possible. Do you want to go to an office everyday or travel a bit for your career? What do you want to wear to work? Are you the dress up sort of girl or not? Do you like being around people or would you rather work on your own? Would you like to lead a group or simply get the job done on your own terms? Do you want to work for someone else or be your own boss? You said nothing in the science field, but being a therapist or psychiatrist might be something you should consider since it does deal with peoples lives. Even celebrities see therapists. This is a high money career at over $125 per hour of your time. You may also want to consider getting into advertising for a magazine or some sort of publication. Whatever you choose make sure you answer the above questions for yourself and put a lot of thought into it. I have a Bachelor's in art with minors in psych and english. I wish I had made art the minor. Why not go out and visit some places you think you would be interested in working at and see if you could spend the day there with an employee? Good luck!!!!

Good question! Sorry about your bad day, I hope you don't get too bogged down in the negative because of a soggy bank holiday. It can be really hard to get out of a rut, especially if you just keep seeing the badside to everything. (which is easy to do) I'd reccomend a simple remedy of inforced positivity. Start laughing at how bad your day was instead of crying, try doing things you'd never normally want to do. Go out more, even when you least want to, when all you want to do is snuggle on the couch watching rubbish TV in your jammies force yourself to phone friends and go down the pub. Go on Amazon now and buy Yes Man by Danny Wallace, cracking book- could change your life! Have a long hard think about what you want from life, all your ambition might have drained away but there must be something that you like doing if even as a hobby or something you enjoy but don't have the confidence to do. Take a risk, throw yourself into a different career or go back to college and learn something you always wanted to learn, you'll meet new people along the way and hopefuly give yourself some of that much needed energy! Good luck, and remember everyone feels like this at some point or another so don't feel alone!

I have no idea either and got my first B.S in 1987. I've been a cop, an ER nurse, a Chemist, the guy that picks up dead people, a paramedic, a computer coder, a librarian and delivered newspapers (not in that order) now I have a different job at a really big company that I never considered until 2 years ago.

I did get several different degrees, including 3 graduate degrees, I do like going to school (It is much easier after your first BS)

So take what you like in college, your first job after you graduate is probably not related to what you studied so unless you do want to be a nurse, or a teacher you can take something that will give you a good general liberal arts education and during that you'll probably find something you like and are good at. I liked everything I did, but now I've found something I like and something that pays a good buck too.

Good luck, study hard, but experience things too. Internships, job shadowing, and professional organizations for careers you're considering are all valuable sources of info about salaries and job suckiness so I'd use those to your advantage .
Oh, consider accounting or actuarial science. Nice offices, good money and plenty of vacation and life-wrok balance.

A lot of it depends on where you live and what the economy is like. What are you majoring in? Sometimes you end up doing something totally different than from what you went to school for. Do you live in a big city? This will tremendously help your chances of finding a nice paying job. It's really tough finding something you want to do and being successful. Right now I'm doing fine, but it's not really the occupation I want to be in so I might be looking once again pretty soon. It is important to make sure it's something you enjoy though...otherwise you might be miserable. You're still young though so you don't have to worry too much at this point -- but it's good that you're thinking about it.

You might not like my answer, but you have to realize that 95% of people your age are having the exact same problem. Deciding your future is a dark tunnel and you won't know when you've reached the end until you see the light, but you better keep on moving till you get there, ya know.

What should you do right now? Explore. Join the publicity club, tutor at a school, try to intern at a TV station, etc. If you stand still and try to figure out which way to go then you will never get there. Even if everything you try sucks, atleast you have narrowed down the list of careers. Plus you have more experiences than everybody else which puts you ahead of everybody else in whatever career you do choose.

I am in the exact same boat as you. I should be graduating from a 4-year college next year, but I can't decide what degree I want. Here I am at a community college 3 years later and I am struggling with what I want. I have taken so many vocational classes trying to come up with something that now none of them will transfer to a 4-year state college. I think I'm going to graduate with what I am best at, which is Graphic Arts. Simply because I need to get out into the world. I've heard alot of people wind up finding another career field totally different than what degree they graduated with. I would say talk to the academic counselors at school. I've talked to them and they said I scored highest in creativity and I would be best at a career in graphic arts or interior design. Maybe they have a test they can give you to see what you'd be best in.

The Teaching field isn't hard to break into. The world needs more teachers to educate. You kind of put yourself in a hard place because you're looking at things from the size of a pay check. I don't think i would do that and teachers don't get payed that little pay goes up as you work longer and has a lot of benefits. My dad's has been a teacher for 27 years and he loves it because it's a safe job and cause he likes to teach. Just go with one that you are not going to be miserable in go with the one you really really want to be.

It would be cool if you could get into the radio, TV, movie, etc. industries. There are a great variety of jobs within each, I'm sure you'd find something you'd like.

You could think about journalism (as you like current events).

Fortunately, you are a sophmore--which means you are still safe within a liberal arts degree. Next year, though, you'll probably have to major and minor in something.

Talk to school counselors, employment agencies, etc. to find out what types of jobs are out there. You may be surprised at the selection. Good luck!

Don't narrow your focus down to one specific little thing. Instead find an area that fits into what you like that will open the most doors for you. For instance business administration, sociology, or an arts degree, very broad so your choices will be open. The main thing is dont focus on salary or how hard or easy it will be, focus on if you like doing that sort of work. This isnt as easy as it sounds and took me a while. I started in accounting was bored to death and switched to interior design,,, its hard work but I love it and that makes all the difference.
