If it moves at a consistent and constant rate, why is it called an escalator?

Ok all these people before me seem to forget. Escalators don't JUST take their passengers UP...... they take them down as well. One goes up...... the other goes down.

So how come it's not called an Escalator/Deflator? ED for short. OOPS..... those initials are already taken for another ailment aren't they? Erectile Dysfunction. Funny how related the two are actually. Hmmmmmmm.

Good question. I always continue walking on escalators because they are too darn slow. It certainly would be more fun it they did escalate; then once you stepped aboard it would move faster and faster and faster and fling you off at the top or bottom of the ride.

You're clever; I think you should design the true escalator. As it is now I usually jump over the final step to reach solid ground....this is a strange childhood ritual I created to avoid being sucked in on that last section of moving stairway. The catapult escalator would make life much easier for me.
