I have had a few problems with my '99 Grand Am but after I got all of the 'bugs' out so to speak it's been a pretty good car to me. Mainly it's just been a lot of little and annoying stuff that has happened, although there have been a few expensives fixes like the alternator, passlock system and wheel bearings, etc.

At 110,000 miles it still drives and handles better then a lot of other cars though. It'll be paid off free and clear in a few months and I plan to keep it for a few more years or until something major goes wrong with it.

The reality is that it's not just a 'domestic' or 'import' issue. Case in point... I used to have a '98 Cavalier that was an absolutely perfect car. Never had a major problem with it and I'd probably still have it today if I hadn't totalled it a few years back. But then I knew others back then that had the same Cavalier model and had countless issues with theirs, cursing their cars all the way. How do you explain that when I had an absolutely perfect Cavalier all the way up to 100,000 miles when I totalled it?

I believe that there are a lot more Toyota, Honda and even BMW drivers out there who have experienced significant problems with their vehicles, then would like to admit. Just go look up some automotive forums on the Internet and start reading....

You take your chances with ANY vehicle you get. Just bank on it.

Open any Consumer Reports car guide and you'll see that most GM vehicles get pretty low ratings in the reliability department when compared to companies like Toyota and Honda.

It's sad to see American car companies get overtaken, but the fact is... the data indicates that they are clearly inferior in reliability, depreciation, and other important aspects.

If you must buy an American car, buy a Pontiac Vibe. It was developed with Toyota and it's essentially a clone of the Toyota Matrix (which is essentially a Corolla reconfigured as a station wagon).

Grand Am's do tend to have a ton of problems, mainly dealing with the powertrain (tranny mostly). I would trade it in for a grand prix. I am on my second grand prix, and havent had hardly any problems with either of them.

the first ingredient is to placed it on a scanner for plausible (likely) faults. which will allow you to recognize what's malfunctioning as a rule. there are quite some issues that would want to stay away from starting up. I had a Pontiac with ECM (pc module) issues. even as my ECM malfunctioned, there have been no codes besides the undeniable fact that it does no longer start up. It did not bypass out unexpectedly, besides the undeniable fact that. it would want to malfunction on and rancid, then ultimately gave out thoroughly. that would want to properly be some thing you'll favor to do if all else fails besides the undeniable fact that it truly is fairly severe priced.
