I think what you're referring to is the collective UNconsciousness that's been worked upon by both Freud and Jung. What they say is that there are intuitive bonds and bridges between decision makers, every decision, and the environments of those decisions. These bonds and bridges characterize the shape of the universe in a certain direction in finite way as compared against the limitless possibilities of individuals and their decisions.

A negative thought will impact the common UNconsciousness by negating a freely held belief. From these beliefs, habits and instincts were developed as well as other behavioral patterns. Without these beliefs, the developed patterns should be forgotten and the awareness of a community or group (or the bridges and bonds) should lean towards another focus.

In other simple terms, negative thought allows a group to figure out a solution to a problem in an exclusionary approach. By figuring out what's wrong, it can figure out what's right.

And about these thumb downs, they have no bearing on the common unconscious because nobody cares about them anyway.
