Bread and Jam for Frances by Lillian Hoban -- marvelous!
Frances is a picky eater. Her wise mother allows her to eat bread and jam for every meal, while she serves wonderful meals to the family, which the father always describes with appreciation and zeal. Frances also has a friend who has wonderful lunches made for him by his mother. Of course, Frances eventually tires of her picky ways and limited menu. One of our favorite moments is when Hoban tells us that, while Frances' baby sister generally eats baby food, "she liked to practice with a string bean whenever she could."
Absolutely delightful story, with wonderful foods you could use. And I love all the other suggestions made here! (Eric Carle is the author of "The Hungry Caterpillar.")

My daugher and I love to read 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar" It eates through all kinds of food and then turns into a butterfly! Fun!
