You can't get piranhas... they get really big and you'd need a 55 gallon tank minimum for even one, and they're not really 'piranha-like' unless you keep a school of them, and then you're talking tanks over 100 gallons.

Dwarf cichlids really are beautiful! but be sure to do some online research before you buy. They can be aggressive and picky about their environments.

Dwarf gouramis might be easier, and nearly as colorful. Again, you have to be sure you get the male-to-female ratio right in the tank or you'll have a lot of fighting going on.

They may not have the 'cool' factor you're looking for, but mollies and platies come in lots of really colorful and exotic-looking varieties, and are very sociable and friendly -- ours ate from our fingers within 24 hours of being brought home, and greet us at the top of the tank with their little dances everytime we approach.

you can't get more then 1 pirranah in a 20 gallon-maybe not even 1. I'm not positive but I've heard that when confined they will nip each other eventually. If you go for cichlids be sure they are all the same (african, south american...) And that they are compatible, some are very aggressive. Also 20 gallons isn't that big and some cichlids get rather large. If it were me I would get little fish and plant the tank. I have a planted 35 gal. hex tank with neons and other tetras and just some little "catfish" to clean and it looks great. The green of the plants really make the colors of the little fish stand out.

What do you consider cool? Some fish that would work in a 20 gallon that are "different":

upside down catfish
ropefish
dojo loach
freshwater sole/flounder
cichlids (probably only 2, and you should research adult size!)
African butterfly
Celebese halfbeaks
small fresh/brackish water puffer

You could also keep a tank of mixed tropical community fish for color, or freshwater shrinp (there are more kinds available now than just ghost shrimp), or an African dwarf frog.

Here are websites where you can look up at least some of these or get some different ideas:

I prefer schooling fish like neon tetras and cardinal tetras. Their red and blue color are beautiful when there is like a 100 of them!
