Indeed, a woman in the USA was collecting donated cans of Silly String to ship to Iraq and Afghanistan to help the soldiers.
The Silly String is very light, and can be sprayed into dark areas to reveal the presence of tripwires that are attached to explosives.

the army actually uses that technqiue, and i heard it on the news, some lady is having a big dontation drive of silly string cans to send over sea's to help US soilders in the Iraq war...kinda interesting how silly string actually helps and is light enough, yet heavy enough to set off a landmine.

Silly string is used by soldiers to find trip wires for bombs, not land mines...
The string is sprayed into a building or area, if it falls and catches a line (otherwise almost impossible to see) the soldiers know the area has a tripwire of some kind - otherwise, if the string falls to the ground, they know there are no trip wires.

yeah, they spray an area of a room, and if there are any traps set in the room, the string will hang on it and the troops will notice. Ingenious idea by some people huh?

not landmines....boobytraps...they spray it into houses and it will catch on tripwires and either set off the trap or hang on the wire indicating the trap is there......it can fly up to 12 feet ahead of the sprayer.....

oh thats cool i read about that. the thing is they have these trick wires that you cant see in buildings that set off bombs. so what they do is they shoot the silly string and if it lands on the floor theres no wires, but if it stays in the air there could be trick wires and bombs...

What about it? I am sure troops happened across it accidentally but it works, its cheap and its biodegradable. More power too them. Its actually for locating trip wires....does that make more sense?
