I'm afraid that others have said it so well, the Romans kicked the hell out of them, twice...............

The British army under Cromwell was the best army the UK ever had. World wide army's would be in the order of history Gideons army the Romans, the Icini the Vikings the Carthaginians, the Barbarias under Gengis Karn the British and the German now the SAS

carthage was a great army, but teh spartans were the greatest army ever pound for pound as 300 spartans beat an army off of 50000 persians

Not really. Rome or Macedonia were better. Carthage relied too much on mercenaries, and like other basically commercial-minded states, kept the military starved of funds.

No. If Carthage had the best army, Rome would not have prevailed ultimately.

No. The elephants were impractical, and killed many of their own soilders, although they were a good psychological element, until the romans figured them out.

And look at Hannibal. He hired mercenaries, and still lost in the long run.

Thus the only reason they were even great is because of a brilliant general, Hanibbal.

P.S. Romans and Greeks, as well as Persians, were all as strong, if not more so.

Obviously not. The Roman army besieged the city and eventually
completely destroyed it. The men were all put to the sword, the surviving women and children were taken into slavery, and salt was plowed into the farmland to prevent crops from growing, insuring that the city would never be rebuilt.

Don't know about that, but I rather think the Mongolian armies of Genghis Kahn (and Kubilai and the rest) were pretty durn good too.
