i don't know how old you are now but this does not sound like a phase to me. in fact it very rarely is "just a phase" as they say. most of the time it is real and something that needs to be faced. but you need to talk to someone and if he is your best friend you need to tell him that he cannot tell your mom. the deal with your mom sounds fishy to me. either she puts on a front with your friend and tells him that she likes gay guys but not lesbians or bi girls and just doesn't want to hurt his or your fellings. or she just doesn't know very many lesbian or bi girls and is basing her opinion on just the few she does know. the best thing to do, in my opinion, is to not dislike someone that has been given a social name like gay, lesbian, black, chinese or martian, but wait to see if i like the actual person or not. society has a bad habit of placing people into groups and disliking the group as a whole. that is called prejudice and it is a habit that society needs to break in order for it to thrive and become one. but enough with the heavy crap. just talk to your friend and eventually you will need to talk to your mom. hope this helped some. take care and God bless.

Is he not a good enough friend to trust with that information? How can your mother be really close to a gay man and yet hate lesbians and bi chicks?

Hopefully (though you'd know better than I would), the fact that your friend is gay would mean that he knows how important it is for you to come out when YOU are ready. Seems like he'd be pretty likely to respect that and not tell your mom.

On a sidenote: ever pointed out to your mom how illogical she's being that gay men are ok but women aren't?

It is so ingrained in our society to be aware of how other women look - as we are constantly comparing ourselves to what ideal beauty is. So you looking at other women doesn't necessarily make you bi - it is normal to look at both sexes. However, if you think about what it would like to kiss, hug and go further, then I would call you bi-curious. Once you made the leap (if you do), then you are bi.
Even then, if you are bi, you will notice your attraction to either sexes will come and go. For them, that is normal.
As to your mom... I wouldn't talk to her about it until after you left home. As to your best friend, nope, I wouldn't tell him either.
Until you knew for sure, keep it to yourself.

i think most people are a little bi, if you don't want to be bi then don't act on it.

It's possible that your friend has rubbed off on you a little. Why hide what you are?

if he is your best friend....then he should be a good person to talk to...he knows you....and should respect you privacy
