How many days before or after ovulation would be best?

If you are trying to concieve, you should time your intercourse to be daily for 3 days leading up to ovulation, on the day of ovulation and on the day after, just in case you ovulate a day late. The egg only lives for 12-24 hours after ovulation, so ideally, it is best to have sperm ready and waiting in the female reproductive tract so that it can be fertilized soon after its release.

If you are very in tune with your cycle, you may already know when you are ovulating. If you are not sure, try tracking your cycles to pinpoint ovulation. There are software programs where you enter your fertility data (like daily temps, cervical changes, test kit results, etc.) and it predicts the best times for you to concieve based on that data. There are 2 very popular ones on the web:
http://www.ivillage.com/fertilityplanner
http://www.fertilityfriend.com/
Both have free trials and are very accurate. They also have forums where you can chat with others or ask for help in interpreting your chart, if you should find you need assistance. The ivillage one has a 60 day free trial going on right now, so you could be pregnant without ever having to pay for the software either.

GOOD LUCK!!!

Having regular sex is the best way to get pregnant. Couples often try to time everything perfectly for ovulation but do not have sex when they think they are not ovulating. It is true that sex that is not within the time of ovulation will not result in pregnancy. However, because women do not always ovulate when they think they will, having sex three times a week will help to a woman cover her bases, so to speak, and not miss an opportunity to get pregnant.

Sperm can survive for up to 3 days inside a woman, so I would say three days before and three days after (just to be sure, in case your ovulation was a day or so off)

Before, if you know for sure when you ovulate. Your egg is not fertile after 24 hours from ovulating, but sperm can live in your body for up to 5 days. You should have sex as much as you can leading up to ovulation for optimizing your chances of conceiving.
