I'm not married, but if I were and they couldn't cure whatever brain malfunction brought it on, I would keep my own name. Why should I take my husband's name? It belongs to him.

Absolutely. I know it's old fashion and it's not that I didn't accomplish anything before I married, but I agree with the other lady when she said it was a way of belonging. I don't know if belonging is the word I would use, but connecting, being assimilated. His values are my values. Were a team. Teams are known by one name, yet there are individual people who enhance it differently. So many people put such a emphasis on wedding rings....the bigger the better....the bigger the more he loves me. I don't buy that. I had a beautiful 2.5 ct marquis and that was supposed to attach me to my husband? I could be any body's wife. But his name...that is the symbol I choose to connect me with him. My husband has a well known name in his industry but when people call me Mrs. W*****, they connect me with him and I am proud to be his wife.
P.S. No I'm not a newlywed. 7 &1/2 years married. Not old, just blessed to have him and he feels the same about me.

I tacked it onto my name and made my maiden name into a middle name. My husband is the only son of an only son so I thought it would be nice for his family to accept his name...besides, I want to have the same name as my kids.

Yes, because I feel it "labels" my family as a union and because I feel that it symbolizes the passing of me from being a little girl in my father's household, to a woman in my husbands.

No, my father's name is my identity. Just as my husband's is for my kids.
