I live in a suburb of Rochester NY (the city with the most violence per capita). Even though it is 30+ miles away, many kids wear gang clothing, and giant shirts (big enough so that they can sag there pants 1.5-2 feet). Also, there are many preps and jocks who think that they are "cool" (which has come to mean the most arrogant people). They think that they are popular and that they own the school, though everybody thinks that they are immature drunks who need to grow up. There are other people who go to this site and cannot type or spell (or use a spell checker) to save their lives. When people type a sentence and forget to use spaces, it makes me wonder...
I don't have anything against them, I just noticed that these people brag about their bad grades, and who is failing more classes, when others are in AP courses in their sophomore year and get 95+ averages (ahem, me). Another thing, foreign speakers of English have better grammar a lot of the time.

Another thing, can anybody explain why sophomores taking Algebra II (junior course) get higher grades than seniors who are taking it for the second time?

THANK YOU LYNETTE!!!
I asked this partly for answers, but more to see people's reactions. You described my school PERFECTLY!!!! And just so you know, in the context you used, it should be cite, not site. Not everybody is perfect like me I guess. JK for those of you who can't recognize a joke.

I think that a lot of it is the media, at least with the fake-gangsters. The preppy jerks are usually the little rich kids who have gone to school with the same people, so they think that everyone should know them. Then there are the fake-christians, who in my school are punk. They have usually been abused and only find God on Sundays but brag all week about finding him. I live in KY and we have the exact same problem. I know that everyone thinks that Kentucky is a bunch of rednecks, but my school is about 95% fake-gangster and 4% preppy jerk. Then another .75% (steadily rising) is Christian-punk (a horrible bunch) and a grand total of .25% is "normal" teenagers who can actually see the rest of this stuff and make the distinctions. The gangster-kids always talk about their failing classes, and then laugh about it. the preppy jerks always go out and get drunk and have sex, then come to school and suck up to the teachers and run all of the clubs (they'll end up being the leaders of America, unfortunately). The Christian-punk kids always have sex, get high and drunk, and swear all of the time, but then they go to church and site Christ as their role model. It really irritates me too. I also notice how bad spelling and grammar is at my school, especially since they've made it this far and apparently still can't read or spell at a third grade level. When I type, I abbreviate (ppl instead of people), but I do the same thing when taking notes, and I know how to actually spell the word. It makes me sad that I have a 3.5 GPA and yet, because of the low test scores at the school that I go to, I get lumped in with all of the idiots. and I agree with the algebra 2 thing, I took it as a sophomore and all of the seniors and juniors ended up copying off of me (not with my approval, but they stole my paper and they are all way bigger than me). The sad part is, they all failed anyway, and I had one of the highest grades in the class. The really sad part is that the guy who always took my paper only passed because he was on the basketball team and the teacher was the basketball coach. That is the kind of thing that pisses me off to no end

i think the answer would lie in their homes where they are either being abused, ignored or pampered.when you are used to suffer or see abuse, physical or verbal, constantly, you see that the aggressor has the power and hence emulate it.
when you have been ignored you do anything to grab attention and generally parents who ignore their kids sit up and take notice when the children behave negatively and seldom when they do what they have to do.
when kids have been pampered they feel they own the world and since at home their world is run by them they feel they can do it everywhere.
they could also have learning problems which where not remedied and thus helped lower their self-esteem such that they went wrong. this also explains why students who repeat courses often do badly in them
what you need is a counselor who can spend time to reach these children and deal with their problems, give them love acceptance and support and motivate them to change their ways.
