It's a matter of perspective. Where some people see opportunity, others see a dead end. Not everyone has the same goals, needs, wants, or interests.
Some people are simply blind and believe that where they are is as good as it gets and are hostile or resentful when they confronted by an opposing view from other of the world.
Going outside of your own country is perhaps one the greatest paths to true understanding of yourself, your own country, and the world around you. I feel really sorry for people who don't want to venture outside of their city or country. They miss so many things and become very close-minded and even ignorant. I couldn't imagine living and dying the same town and never going anywhere. Variety is the spice of life. Why settle for just salt and pepper? There are hundreds of herbs and spices to explore. Same goes for cultures and countries.
Some would say, "Why go anywhere, you have the internet?" The internet is a poor substitute for getting out and seeing and doing things.
Be creative, find a goal, and go where ever your dreams may take you. You'll be a much more educated and happy person for it.

When you travel abroad, you come in contact with new ideas, new ways of thinking and new ways of doing things. If you go overseas with an open mind, you realize that the way things are done in other countries is not strange but merely different, and that many of the things done in another country may actually be better ways of doing things than in your own country. You change. You become less influenced by your own culture. You begin to see what's wrong with your own country and culture. You begin to see things from a different point of view.

By travelling in your own country, you cannot gain the same insight.

And blah blah blah.

Traveling is an excellent way to learn to see things from a different angle. Just imagine that a group of extra terrestrial aliens came to earth. They would have the advantage over us because not only do they know their own culture, but they get to discover ours in our own environment. When they go back home, they probably will compare the way we live and the way they live, and take the better from both ways.
