What happened in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947?

I'm writing a report on it. I know there was an "alien encounter" and saucer sightings and stuff, but does anybody have any details?

TexasChick is close, but it was not a ‘research’ balloon. It was a high-altitude reconnaissance spy balloon. Remember this was the early days of jet aircraft. Chuck Yeager did not break the sound barrier until the fall of 1947. There were no spy jet aircraft or spy satellites.

But there were high altitude spy balloons .And, when one crashed in New Mexico and some local report mentioned aliens and UFOs, the government actually encouraged the story because the did not want (the Russians especially) anyone to find out about this spy program.

According to a 1997 US Air Force report. “The Roswell Report: Case Closed”, it was one of these balloons that set off the notorious UFO incident.

These were not ordinary balloons. They were as tall as a 3-story building and could reach altitudes of 170,000 feet (more than 32 miles or 51 kilometers and they could carry 15,000 pounds (6800 kilograms). In fact, balloons are still used to send probes into outer space.

The start of the conspiracy happened. An old black and white film exists of a man-made ufo from Germany in the early forties. It had many opposing magnetic fields and smoked heavily as it hovered. The American Army secured all technology from Germany in forty five and was introducing the various top secret designs during the fifties and sixties. The hype was all about public reaction to classified situations. The gov didn't want to get caught misleading the public and so gave up on all ufo related incidents.

An alien spacecraft crash landed. There were even newspapers that printed that a "flying saucer" had crashed, then it was hushed up. After a few days it was hushed up and has been ever since. Over the years different people have come out with testimony about the crash coverup. There is plenty of information on the internet about it.

Extraterrestrial Life was found, they wanted a lid kept on it, and many people were killed to keep them quiet to the public !! Some just disappeared, right from our armed forces ! It was a weather balloon, that is a blatant LIE ! People did not get murdered and disappear for nothing. They wanted to go public, and had evidence I am sure.
