Because there's no mechanical direct connection from the wheels to the engine like in a manual transmission car. The power from the engine to the transmission is transmitted by hydraulic fluid in the torque converted. The hydraulic fluid is pressurized by the pump which is turned by the engine. Since the engine is not running... Some cars (older) can be started by pushing but the car has to be pushed at over 25mph

Transmissions today donot have a rear pump on the output shaft
that could enable push starting older cars Cheevys some fords and chrysler cars from the early 60' s and back could be started in such a manner. but todays weight restrictions and space there is not hardly enough room for a monkey to put their hand in there much less a rear pump in the transmission

OK in older vehicles with hand shift trans'. you place car in gear, when you let out clutch rear wheels to eng is solid ,therefore eng, will turn,
In automatic cars you have torque converter ,behind this is an oil pump, when your car is operating the oil pump fills torque converter with trans.oil ,you can"t duplicate this by pushing car,
matter of fact it is a good way to tear up trans,.
