Windows XP was created to shut it down. Howewer, I have been using Windows Vista Release Candidate 1 and Vista's normal shut-down is hibernation or sleep. Vista was created to work longer and more productively.
So, it depends how often you use you PC. If you use it every day, hibernate it - if you use it every other day, then shutting down is the best!

if i leave small periods i let it open or log off.
at night i prefer to shut down instead of hibernate since a blue light blinks all time which I don't like

Normally hibernate, but it causes problems after a while and I have to reboot eventually.
