When a player is in front of the opposing sides players except for their goalkeeper in their half of the pitch before he receives the ball from a team mate.
If he runs back onside before he receives the ball it is okay. and if he is offside and is not interfering with play, and a team mate scores a goal from an onside position that is okay as well.
You will notice that in todays game attacking players slowly walk back from an attack position after losing the ball, in case his team makes a quick break from the other team losing the ball. he will run onside in a good position to outwit slower defenders. Arsenal frontman Thierry Henry is a master at this.

OFFSIDES MEAN THAT YOU ARE BEHIND THE DEFENSE PEOPLE BEFOR THE BALL IS THEIR FIRST. LIKE FOREXAMPLE THE BALL IS BEING PLAYED ON YOUR SIDE OF THE GAME AND THE OTHER TEAMS DEFENSE IS UP ON THE HALF WAY LINE. AND IF YOU ARE ON THEIR SIDE IN BETWEEN THEM AND THE GOAL WHEN THE BALL IS NOT THERE BEFORE YOU THEN YOU WOULD BE OFFSIDES.

doesn't everyone have certain zones to play in and if you get out of your zone you are off-sides? Heck, I don't know. I can't even tell when the time's running out. The clock runs backwards.
