Wish people were as friendly here as in Ga. I moved to NY. and wow culture shock, they are rude, presumptuous, and uncaring. Not like where I was raised, Villa Rica Ga.

Two years ago, we made a trip where we covered a good part of the US. (north and South) 23 states in all. To be quite honest we were surprised at the lack of friendliness in the south. It was so noticeable because we had always heard how friendly southerners were, hospitality and all that. At a (name brand) motel in Georgia, we called the desk to tell them that there were no towels in our room. The desk clerk said she would have someone put some out on the counter for us and we could come down and get them!!! The best, most fun waitress we had was in a small restaurant in Cut Bank, Montana and the nicest, most helpful motel clerk was in Sturges, South Dakota. Can't get a lot further north than that. Way to go Yankee's!!

huh? i dunno what you are referring to but i live in the south & find that generally people are people no matter where you are, north, south, east , west...well, you get it, right? i do find southern people very open, friendly & perhaps more trusting than, say, northerners, but then maybe they haven't been screwed over as much & the trust hasn't gone bye bye. when a dirty deed is done to another person, the first casuality is the good samaritan, that one wicked deed has caused a trusting soul to be killed off permanently, as if is any other! but then you already know this. civility? like the northerners or mid-westerners have buckets of civility & only us poor southerners lack it? gimme a break! first & let's be clear about this. i find your attitude offensive. legislate against morality? legislate this my friend - you can't control the world or human behavior by laws or degrees. it's been tried - like it's call dictatorship. and like that went over well! and another thing - this is a biggie - what's yucky to you might just be ok with someone else. civility? criminal? in the same sentence? are you nuts? oh, i already know the answer! YES!

Why focus on the south with such a law? If you're going to the trouble of passing a law that requires people to learn civility and etiquette, take it a step further and have it be a part of elementary and high school curriculum.

But to say that people in the south are in need of such training is biased. Anywhere that you go, you'll encounter different people with different attitudes, different cultures, and different outlooks on life. Each person should be seen for who they are and not lumped into a stereotypical pool.

Yes and all southerners who move to Kansas and the rest of the mid-west should take American History, so they can get that right.

My experience with the south, and it is extensive, is the manners and civility of that region often, though not always goes like this: nice to your face and talk about you later. That gentility is passive-aggressive behavior.

Sure as long they first improve their school systems so the students aren't smarter than the teachers. I take it you're referring to people from the North East, yeah hi I'm one of them. We tend to lose our patience quickly when faced with ignorance and stupidity; we move and think quickly and if you are in our way we tend to run you over and not care weather or not you got hurt, because...well we are beyond our tolerances...time is money and all we are concerned with is how our time is being used and if it is being wasted then what kind of reaction do you expect...a civil one? yeah right good luck on that one.

Your question demonstrates that people other than Southerners need classes in good manners and civility.

Great idea! Instead of "community service" on first offense, send them to Southern charm school. Teach them such alien phrases as "yes, sir", "no ma'm", and "bless your heart".
