So you are asking how to do this?

Hook the external monitor (VGA/DB15/DVI) on back of laptop to a cable that allows DB15/DVI/HDMI or get an adapter to complete this connection to the input on your HDTV.

Go into your Laptop monitor control panel and set up your second display as appropriate. If it is an ATI or Nvidia video output, there is a video setup under advanced, when you do a monitor properties. Unless your TV out can do an 1080i emulation, you will not get the best display . You will have to use 480 line resolution.

On most laptops, there is a function duality on the top row of function keys. You hold down the FN key (lower left on keyboard) and hit the Function key that shows a monitor/LCD icon.

Hit once, the External Monitor only comes on, the laptop LCD goes off.

Hit again, the laptop LCD and the External monitor are both on

Hit again, the LCD only comes back, External Monitor goes off
Cycle repeats...
