From what I've read the Bible goes easy on prostitutes- although it looks down on them and often quotes them as a symptom of an ethical malaise.
The reasons for this are that prostitution has its roots in poverty, and that the Bible looks down on them so much that they are not really considered bound by the same rules.
Why become a prostitute? A few people do it for greed, as some people can work a single shift or job one day a week and live off it. However many others are cajoled by poverty, debts or drug addiction. Prostitution is a spoiler for any meaningful relationships, so it can be used subconsciously by those who want to avoid them due to past trauma.
I would hope people don't despise prostitutes since they are still sisters and friends after all.

Before you talk about sin, just remember there are many reasons for prostitution. There is forced prostitution where in some cases very young females are kidnapped from their country and smuggled into another for reasons of prostitution. Others are raped as young children with prostitution being a residual effect. And some are victims of their environment.
Let me just add that prostitution can be just as addictive as drugs or alcohol. Whether sexually abused as a young child or forced into it, prostitution can be a very hard habit to break once it begins. Never forget that prostitutes are the victims.

It's only a sin if you're one of the types of Christians that thinks it's a sin. For the rest of the world, sin is generally considered a Christian term used to bash other people.

I suppose that there are many reasons. I think that drug addiction would probably rank quite high on the list. Or perhaps young girls who are street people because they found their homelife intolerable...the list goes on and on....
