Directions on salt mixes will tell you 1/2 cup of salt/gallon of water. I have yet to find a brand that will get the water up to a proper salinity using this amount, though.

What you need to do is get a specific gravity meter (also called a hydrometer). This measures how much salt is in the water by using a float. If you are keeping a fish-only tank, you can keep the salinity at 1.020-1.023. If you plan to keep invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, corals, etc.) you'll need to keep it at 1.024-1.026. You can get/order a hydrometer from your local pet/aquarium store.

These usually run $6-10 and there are a number of models available:

yes, you should buy the used water from the aquariums. all they do is take out the water from the tank and sell it. here in australia saltwater is usually 20 dollars per 20 litres. But most people who live on the coast just get natural water from the beach. ok, if you can't get hold of used water then just buy the salt from the pet store and on the back it should have directions for use. If not, ask the pet shop owner. good luck with your new tank!

people who attempt nano reefs (saltwater small reefs) are oftentimes VERY experienced. It takes a ton of artwork to maintain, and a ton of expertise and adventure, whih it would not sound such as you have. attempt a freshwater 20 gallon. there are various colourful beautiful freshwater fish, which includes dwarf gouramis, and you gets faux coral and function it set as much as "seem" like saltwater. you would be preparing your self for saltwate interior the destiny. it particularly is not something you elect to purely bounce into. novices have hardship adequate with freshwater, and saltwater is a lot lots lots tougher. in case you elect to waste your cash, circulate forward. a 10 gallon saltwater will fee 3 hundred-500 money, nto at the same time with fish, and lots additional money month-to-month to maintain. you will get a freshwater tank for a million/2 that fee, and minimum fee to maintain. And we are actually not speaking approximately "confusing to maintain" here. we are speaking approximately almost impossible for somebody new to the pastime. you need to in all risk initiate out new with a lots bigger tank, yet attempting to start a small saltwater tank is in simple terms asking to be upset. you will waste lots money attempting to "restoration" issues. Saltwater fish are many times lots much less resiliant than freshwater, so which you incredibly have not have been given any room for blunders. upload in a small tank, and properly, one small mistake and all your fish die, you're out one hundred-200 money in initiating back, determining what you probably did incorrect, and so on. So i think of in case you elect to try this 10 gallon saltwater concern, and you have 1000 money to completely blow, and you appreciate killing fish, choose for it!
