There is much disagreement on this issue in the Star Wars fan community. I think it depends on whether you're a film fan or a fan of the Star Wars mythos.
If you're a film fan, watch episodes 4-6 first. Those are generally regarded by the film community as being FAR better films than episodes 1-3. Plus, you'll get the historical context of the film and appreciate how the creative process has changed dramatically from 1977 to present.
If you're looking to be a die-hard Star Wars fan and want to see the storyline in proper context, then take the purist route -- watch 1-3, then 4-6.
I hope you enjoy them.

the way it was released... 4-6, and then 1-3... THEN watch it all the way through 1-6, but the first way is the best.

If they've never seen any of the films, they should be watched in release order 4,5,6,1,2,3 to get the full effect of some of the revelations. If you've seen 1,2,3 the big reveal in 5 doesn't do much for you, or the extra revalations in 6. After you've seen all 6, watch in 1-6 order to pick out details and problems.
Hope this helps

I say starting with the old ones. Go 4-6, then 1-3. Not sure why, but it was fun to see the 'before' side of the story.

the best way is 1,2,3,4,5,6, because your are going to understand everything.
I saw first 4-6 and then 1-3, and in the movie 3 I still tie things from the other parts. but if I have to choose in what order I want to see it. from the 1 to 6.
