Janis Joplin became a pretty famous singer in the 60s and she wasn't a looker.
And Owen Wilson is the ugliest guy in the movies, but he somehow lands parts...

The standard has changed. What was once considered beautiful is different...changes over time. But those who are considered "beautiful" definitely get the breaks.

You just have to be right for the part. There are many actors/actreses& singers who are not very atractive.You just have to think you're good or good looking.
