I am 22 yrs. old and am 5 months pregnant. Six days ago, I experience numbing in the bottom left side of my mouth. The next day, pain came along with the numbness. The pain got worse and I thought it was a toothache because my teeth in that area became sensitive.
My husband took me to the dentist and we found out that it's probably inflamed tissues of the nerve that's located in that area (possibly due to infection or trauma). He showed me a chart of where the nerve begins and extends and that's the same area that I experience numbness and pain (all on the bottom left side).
He says he has never seen this before and all he can do is prescribe me amoxicillin. He says the amoxicillin won't harm the baby. But, if it doesn't clear up in a few days, or it gets worse (like the area starts to swell), then he may reffer me to a neurologist.
I am scared. I am also on beta-blockers for my heart and don't want to add more stress to the baby.
Has anyone had this happen before?

I've taken really good care of my teeth. I'm also on prenatal and have been trying to eat as healthy as possible.
My OB has said that numbness of the gum is NOT normal during pregnancy, which lead me to the dentist, and also to this website.

i had soreness and swelling of my gums and tender teeth in my third trimester. it was because i wasn't taking in enough calcium, and the baby needed more calcium than i was taking in, so my teeth and gums were being deprived of calcium for the baby. i started taking a calcium supplement in addition to my pre-natals and the pain was gone and swelling down in a week. ask you OB if this may be the case for you, and ask before you start taking more calcium because i am not sure how safe it would be to mix it with the meds you are already taking.

congratulations! i hope you find out what the problem is and get it taken care of so you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy!

Well your dentist may be totally right but you get a lot of weird stuff when your having a baby. My OBGYN said it was normal in your second trimester to have soreness in your gums. sometimes your gums may even bleed. I experienced something similar when I was pregnant with my twin daughters.
