I buy my kids books from half.com. But you must buy based on the ISBN specific to the edition specified.

Get the ISBN from the school, or do a search on bn.com or amazon.com. Then compare prices on these sites. If you have a Barnes & Noble membership, you will save an additional 10% off of the list price for new books. But used books are generally much much cheaper on half.com.

You can also try ebay, but you have to wait until auctions are over. Media mail takes about 6-10 days. I know, I both buy and sell textbooks that way.

Amazon.com is probably the best, followed by Half.com which is owned by eBay. There are others, but I can't begin to tell you what they're called. STEER CLEAR of Alibris.com at all costs. If they list a book and they're out of it - they'll send you whatever is in stock and it might be a 3d edition when you need the 5th and so on. You might also check with your school and see if they have an exchange program where you can trade in the books you no longer want for ones you can use that semester. Not all schools have this program, but a lot do.

If you order on-line, remember, it will take about 3 weeks to get the book since they're going to use "Media Mail" which takes a while - its not a Post Office priority. Amazon lists that as "Standard Shipping."

I know this is going to sound obvious but seriously check out the universities book store...you can buy used books for rather cheap. My sister, who is a single mom of a newborn and roughly in the same situation as you find yourself in bought hers there for a lot cheaper than they were selling them for new and the plus...when you're done, if they're in good condition, most campus book stores will pay you some of what you paid for them to resell again. I'm hoping this wasn't just at her college. She goes to Ohio State University so I'm guessing that most colleges would be able to offer something like this in some shape or form. This year my sister that i mentioned being in the same situation just found out that there is an online program that will help greatly with the prices of materials (books and any equipment) that are necessary for college if you're independently raising a child or children. I will try to get you the web address. Good luck.

Honestly, I got most of mine through Amazon (people selling their used textbooks). If not there, just do a google search for "used textbooks" and you'll get a bunch of sites that are decent (e.g. Abe books).

Ebay. And if you can't find it there check half.com. I have bought all my books from those 2 sites. And they are normally half or less than half the price of the book brand new. And then once you use the books you can sell them back on numerous sites(make sure it is legitimate). I only ended up spending like $50 on all my books a semester buy the time I buy them used and sell them back.
