The people who do best in the practice tests will get treated like royalty/go to the front of the lunch queue/get 10 bonus stars/be allowed to eat a bar of chocolate in class/have a letter sent home saying they are wonderful/have their name at the top of the list on the wall and so on.
In my view, the hard part is not doing these things to the children who don't perform. It does not take much to motivate children as long as you can manage to think on their level. If you have a bunch of kids who like to do something forbidden in lessons, you can ban the forbidden activity, except for those who meet the targets.
If you are the sort of teacher who does not like taking risks, just posting the results of tests or a list of those who are doing homework on a noticeboard in the classroom can help.

Help teach the subject to be examined.
Help to create self-motivation through positive reward in their feelings of happiness when grasping the subject.
Instill confidence in the childs success in their grasp of the subject by pointing out all they have learned.
Show them your pride in their learning abilities through love, attention and mention of your being impressed by their own motivation and intelligence in being able to learn.

For the studying part, make it easy to study for the exam. Make the study material very structured. For the actual taking of the test, tell them you will not move on to new material until they tested adequately on the old stuff. And you will postpone the fieldtrip and keep re-testing them every day until they do well.

You can always bribe them. The better the grade, the more money you give them. Also, when they get an A, make a point of congratulating them and stick it on the fridge for at least a week.

Make it fun. Have smaller exams to lead up to the bigger one. Teach for success and reward progress rather than results.

I wish I knew.
Maybe there's hope. Can you forgive a mixed metaphor?
How to handle a woman?
Mark me well I can tell you sir.
The way to handle a woman, is to love her.
Simply love her.
Merely love her.
Love her.
Love her.
----From the 1960s Broadway play, "Camelot".
