My toilet overflowed while I was at work (for a long time). The whole room smells of urine. The carpeting is indoor/outdoor and no padding.
Does anyone have a suggestion? Except hiring a pro or total removal. No budget to work with.

get a carpet cleaner at walmart, it needs the water taken out, or it will get moldy, or try a fan over night, and put on that carpet fresh for animals it is dry and you vacuume it up.

Depending on how big your house is, it can take about half a day to steam clean wall to wall carpeting. Most companies will be able to work around furniture, but obviously it's better if you can move as much furniture as possible so that the cleaners can clean as much carpet as possible. You'll want to open up your windows after the carpet cleaning has been done to air out your rooms (and with this heat, to quicken up the drying time). If you are talking about cleaning hand made rugs, then cleaning is done off site and you generally have to wait 2-3 weeks for the professional cleaners to return your carpet.

If you could rent a carpet steamer that may be good. You could try the rug cleaners like Woolite or Resolve, that have you foam up the rug and use a clean mop to scrub the suds - and then you vacuum once it is dried.

If you could do this a couple of times it may be better.

if you have a shop vac this would be good to get up the water. Then you could go and rent a carpet cleaner and clean your carpets and let them dry overnight. this should take care of the problem.
