They couldn't keep up. They spent so much time trying to launch their product that once they launched others just copied it and were able to spend more time improving. It's referred to as the first movers disadvantage which states that, " first movers are either too smart for their own good and chum out gizmos or services that are either too expensive or too smart for the average consumer's taste. TiVo had a huge first movers disadvantage when cable companies copied their DVR technology and made it cheaper for everyone to use. They're doing better now that they have contracts with huge providers such as DirecTV.
