You really don't until you look at structure. The first compound is an organic compound, is such compounds are generally covalent. The other is an ionic compound, since sodium is the positive ion. Very few sodium compound are covalent. The compound is a hydrated borate.

it is easy to find out an ionic bond contains a metal and a non metal and a covalent bond contains two non metals so if the compound contain a metal element and non metal elment then it is a covalent bond example magnesium oxide magnesium is metal oxygen is non metal and a compound which contains two non metals is a covalent compound example carbon dioxide both carbon and oxygen are non metals
