Do you mean: (49)^1/2 Or, (49)(1/2)? I'll solve both expressions.
1. (49)^1/2
First: when a number/value is raised to the power of a fraction, rewrite the expression with the radical sign...

Sec: find the square root of 49...
= 7
2. (49)(1/2)
First: since 1/2 is a fraction > make the whole number "49" a fraction - place 49 over 1...
(49/1)(1/2)
Sec: multiply the numerators & denomiantors, separately...
(49*1) / (1/2)
49/2

if that is 49 multiplied by 1/2 then the answer is 24.5 because that is half of 49.
if that is (49) raised to 1/2 then the answer is 7 since raising that number to 1/2 means you must find its square root. however, you must have stated it this way (49)^(1/2) to be more correct.
but with your question, the more appropriate answer is 24.5

That's like asking who's buried in Grant's tomb. The answer is 49 1/2, or 49.5.
Maybe you mean a + sign between the 49 and the 1/2. If that's the case, the answer is 49.5. Maybe you mean a * sign (multiplcation). If that's the case, the answer is 24.5. Maybe you mean a ^ or exponential sign. In that case, the answer is 7, the square root of 49. Maybe you mean (49)*1/2. In that case the answer is 24.5.
So your ambiguous expression allows for a variety of answers. Take your pick.

ok (49)1/2 you must mean 49 x (1/2) = 49/2 which is where i stop since fractions mean more, but i bet you need to go further
49/2 = 24 and 1/2 in decimal terms 24.5

or 80.78734226 for 49 to the 1/2 power (if the 1/2 was supposed to be super script)

when a number is in parentheses, the ( ) it means multiply. When you multiply 49 X 1/2 (or 0.5) the answer will be the half of the larger number (49)
