What is a big element of American culture; an idea, action, shared characteristic, behavior, belief, value, opinion, action, etc. that is viewed as very American? Not necessarily uniquely American, just a large element of American culture.

Television.....cheeseburgers..... freedom of speech. Everything else we pretty much disagree on.

The traditional American trait was love of freedom, distrust of government, the melting pot of various immigrants and tolerance. You can see how much of this is under attack.
