By definition a Mantar is a syllable, a word, a sentence, or group of sentences which is supposed to have spiritual or magical power or meanings attached to Japuji. A Mantar is further classified as a Beej Mantar(seed Mantar), Guru Mantar, Mool Mantar (root Mantar)etc.

Mantar is a north indian word used for mantra.
But Mantra means a different thing and mantar connotes a different thing altogethe.

Mantra generally refers to the chants while praying to God whereas mantar generally referred as chants used in black magic or any type of magic.
