Okay, well for this machine we needed to find the sources for alternate energy. It was a machine that would open a can of pop. First there was a jar that would be rolled down a ramp. The jar would hit a spring that was attached to a textbook. The text book would fall off the table and it would hit a screw that was attactched to a can of pop ( the lever) and it would open a hole in it.

My question is what part does gravity take part in?

The gravity first takes effect when the jar begins to roll down the ramp. After this, gravity causes the book to fall off the table enabling the screw to puncture a hole in the can of pop.

Gravity plays a part in all of it. If I understand your question correctly, you are asking what role does gravity play in this problem. Gravity is what causes the Jar to roll down the ramp and not float in mid air. Tension in the spring is released when the jar hits it, causing the spring to 'jump', thereby flipping the textbook. If there were no gravity, the textbok would float just like the jar would. Instead, gravity pulls the book down. The book then falls on the screw, etc.

Redneck explination is this: Gravity is a force in the center of the earth, like magnetism. It pulls everything toward it like a magnet pulls metal. The book falling off the table is being pulled toward the 'magnet' as far as it can go, causing it to hit the screw.

gravity is a force that pushes things with less of a force towards the surface of the earth, all the objects described in that paragraph move through their needed motion because of gravity pushing them down. If gravity didnt play a role, the objects would either merely budge or float in space, you are able to walk, and do the things you do because of gravity.

hope that helped

gravity is your source of [potential] energy after you put the jar up on the ramp. whatever energy raised the jar is your actual source of energy
