I think the best way to learn about this career is to find some people who is doing exactly what you would like to be doing and interview them. Ask as many questions as they will agree to answer and then ask for a job with him or her so that you can learn the ropes from the inside. You will soon have enough information, experience and networking contacts to start your own career.

You would need to obtain a student visa and be able to cover all your expenses without working since that kind of visa won't allow you to have a job. California is currently is a major state of upheaval, would suggest you go somewhere else in the US where the economy is more stable and the universities aren't in such crisis.
