When you initially spray a perfume it is concentrated and it brings out the strong alcohol smell; this is the reason it smells strong in the bottle. The same perfume will also smell different on each person because it reacts to the oil in the skin. When you go to test perfume, you should only smell 5 samples at a time and the perfume counter will provide coffee beans for you to smell so that the perfumes do not blend into one another. If you spray the perfume on a piece of paper and let it sit for about 20 minutes, it should give you a sense of what it will smell like on you (Not an exact scent due to the reaction of your body oil). Good perfume is not meant to be strong, it should leave a light scent on your body and should last for hours.

Conditions are different when you are testing the perfume at the counter than at home.
The sample has been sitting in light and been handled by many different people, which both degrade the original composition of the perfume. When you apply the perfume at home, you are actually getting the authentic aroma after the alcohol dissipates. Also, everyone's varying body chemistry will slightly change the smell of perfume, so, e.g. if you smell something on a friend, it might not smell the same on you.

I don't know. I find that the tester's smell better (or worse) than the perfumes themselves. For instance, the Burberry Brit Red tester smells awful, but the perfume is better. Or the Britney Spears "In Control" tester smells better than the perfume. Maybe they enhance it or something to try and sell more. Well, if they left it alone they would probably sell just as much, instead of misleading people....

I think that the perfume testers smell a lot better because they are mingled with the other perfumes to perfection! I love the perfume counter!

Well there's three things going on....
the first is your body chemistry which determines if anything smells good or bad on your skin...and your body chemistry changes from day to day...
the second is what I call the "halo" effect...you are in a semi
glamorous setting, looking for something alluring..........so your memory of this glamorous smell isn't as glamorous at 6 in the am when you're putting it on...
and third we are talking about mostly chemical compounds, which notoriously change...
there is a good reason perfume heirs are trendy

because you are testing them on a piece of paper and your body reacts differently when it is on you (your smell mixes with it, not saying you stink just your natural smell mixing there)...also if you are testing too many the smells blend together any good perfume store will have coffee beans there to smell inbetween so it kinda cleans your nose.

Yes. The testers really are better.
I really do believe that they put more aroma in the testers.
It's been that way all of my life. It's obvious to me.
I truely believe the ones we buy are diluted.

I have no idea why it happens but I've noticed it too!
It's such a pain I've been buying fragrances from Victoria's Secret or Bath and Body Works instead. And I spend less and am much happier.
