Not in receipt of benefits, only lasted 3 months because my work was part time bookkeeper. Its just a very stressful feeling unemployable. It does not help a midlife crisis if I am having one. I was fired because I asked my director/boss if I was entitled to a company pension similiar the other staff - He said he was offended by inquiry. After 7 years employment,! so here I am feeling a bit awful 1 and half year later.
Well, the labour board was on my side and fined the director. That money kept me going a few months. Any business start up ideas? Thank you everyone!.

simple. FREEDOM!!!! you now have the ability to decide what you really want to do with your career/life. How about.... starting your own business? It can be an online business.. or even turn a hobby into a business! then all you have to do is promote, market and score! Its hard work, but ive done it. I have 3 businesses and im only 27. I get to make my own hours and best of all..im my own boss.

1. think of business ideas
2. what do you enjoy doing?
3. what type of business would your community enjoy? An internet cafe? or maybe even a Public indoor Pool, or how about an arcade? Do you like minature golf..and pool tables?
4. Take out a business loan to help you get started!

it's that simple. you can do it... and best of all you will have free time to do the things you enjoy in life. you deserve the occassional time off.. as im sure youve been working most youre life right? Why not be your own boss and take control?
You CAN do it.. its just up to you to decide WHEN =)

good luck!!!

Maybe it's time for you to try the other route now....being self employed! I am 46 years old and will never worry about pensions or lay offs again.
It cost me just under $200 to get started, I got a free website as well as all of the marketing tools and training to get me started. I was so impressed with the product I market and what it did for my health and well-being, that I was practically ready to buy the company! But I didn't....lol.....I just bought a $35 membership and one case of product and got to work.
I think because I wanted this so bad and was determined to never be in a position again where others told me what to do and how to do it, particularly because I knew more than my bosses did about the business, that it became the driving force behind my efforts. I found a company that I can truly admire the integrity of the owners, LOVE the product and believe everyone needs it.
The compensation plan pays like no other, so everything is in place to jump right in and start making money!
I help everyone in my organization any way I can to see their goals reached.

well i am not 45 but I am 36 so i am close. My opinion good jobs are very hard to come by now. making 26 to 40 per hour requires not just having a great skill but having connections with the right people. for example i have seen skilled construction workers die to try to get with the federal prevailing wage jobs here in Hawaii.. they get shown the door. 2 kids 18 years old had connections high up in the company and these punks were lawn cutters..in fact one of em cut his finger off trying to get a rock out of the lawnmower..lol...I am a carpenter and i fought for 8 months to get on these projects.. the pay is great but the work is brutal. pay is 52 per hour..The punks got on because they knew people. Nothing in life is fair..its not even close. now i got fired from a job i worked 3 years to get..paid me 26 per hour with the feds. Circumstances were pretty bad and good thing i took notes every day on everything! this world is mean and you have to push back you cannot always be on the defensive or they will push you into a hole right. your still young enough to make it..I know it hurts like a sonnabitch to have this happen..like you now question everything. you have to look inside yourself as to what kind of a man you are take the bull by the balls and use all your focus to recover from this. I sure hope everything goes alright okay.

try unemployment you should get 6 months..plenty of places out there will pay a really good cash wage..go to craigslist and look under jobs..I have done great doing remodeling work and they pay me cash up to 30 per hour while i look for work and the unemployment helps out a lot..try it out and at the end of the unemployment youll actually be ahead of the game

It happened to me at the age of 52. I am now doing what I've wanted to do for quite some time - sell on ebay. I may not make the money ( atleast not yet ) that I did before, but I am happier. Afterall, there's a silver lining in every cloud.

unfortunate
If it were to happen to me (in 30 years)
then I suppose I would find a new job...
pay may not be as much but you don't really have much of a choice

things get tight, its not really uncommon to be layed off anymore. Look for a new job, you have experience in something so It shouldnt be as hard to find a job now that the person has so many years experience in the field.

still, it would suck to be layed off.

It can be a tight spot, depending on what you did for a job. some employers offer some sort of education program to help you in your future employment if they aren't going to hire back. It's a mad, mad, mad world out there...I wish you the best
