'Survival of the Fittest' is a bad interpretation of what Darwin and Alfred Wallace had in mind.
Beachman had a good answer, but I'd like to expand on it. For example, you have a limited area in which to live and a finite food supply, If your population - say, of beetles - grows too large for the food supply, a lot of them are going to die off. If, however, some beetles split off from the main group and find a food source that no one else is using, they are going to adapt to using that food source (find another niche in which to *fit*), and will survive, while their less-adaptable cousins will not.

Survival of the fittest is a phrase which is a shorthand for a concept relating to competition for survival or predominance. Originally applied by Herbert Spencer in his Principles of Biology of 1864, Spencer drew parallels to his ideas of economics with Charles Darwin's theories of evolution by what Darwin termed natural selection.
The phrase is a metaphor, not a scientific description; and it is not generally used by biologists, who almost exclusively prefer to use the phrase "natural selection".

It means that for any given environment the fittest is the best equipped to survive and reproduce "environment" includes such factors as predators, food availability, climate, topography, salinity, humidity, etc etc. Those living things best adapted to survive the world around them at any one time are most likely to reproduce and so pass on their genetic characteristics to the next generation; they are therefore described as "fit" or the "fittest".

in evolutionary biology, it properly means survival of whichever creature best FITS it's particular niche. it has been improperly construed to mean the fastest, the strongest, firecest, most intelligent, or "best" survive. a jaguar is fast and strong, but couldn't survive in the arctic. a crocodile likewise couldn't survive in the alps. a sea slug is not fast, strong, fierce or intellligent, but it is perfectly adapted to its environment, and therefore is the "fittest" for it.

It's an evolutionary reference. It does not mean physically in shape or "fit", it refers to the biological traits which allow an organism to survive better than another organism.
