Several things. One is to use the security protocol that requires a password for access to the wireless network (WEP on older routers, WPA or WPA2 on newer ones). Another is to use what is called a "hardware filter" that allows only the computers you designate to access your network. Some people also advocate having the router hide its name from being broadcast. Wikipedia has a good article on this.

First and foremost, enable WPA or WPA2 encryption. There are other techniques which can ward off the casual hacker, but without encryption they won't stop a serious attacker.

I would never want you to learn that. Then if Im in your nieghborhood with my laptop how could I use your connection to surf the net and answer these silly little questions. Seriously I hope no one ever tells you.

theres fun little programs out there where when a person uses ur connection, they get a virus that kicks them off the web. also Norton and otehr people make software you can buy that will encrypt it
