Maybe listening to music, or counting forever. I usually listen to music until I get drowsy. Then I turn it off, and sleep peacefully. My brother lays in bed for ten minutes. Then he walks to a room that is full of darkness, light will tell your brain to wake up. Then he walks back to his room and sleeps peacefully all night long.

Reading before bed helps. Advice a doctor gave me one time was to make your bedroom a place to sleep, only. No TV or computer or other distractions. This way, when you go into your bedroom you subconsciously think it's time to sleep. He also didn't like prescribing habit forming medication like most sleeping pills are and suggested I take some Benadryl, which he said isn't habit forming, but it still helped me fall asleep. Another thing that helps is getting on a set schedule. If you want to get to bed earlier then start waking up earlier which you will make you tired earlier.

They say make it very dark, don't watch TV in the bedroom, if you don't fall asleep right away get up and do something than try again later, don't drink caffeine or eat chocolate, take a warm bath before bed, exercise in the morning, drink warm milk it has the same chemical as turkey that makes us sleepy, have a routine like reading or listening to soft music just before to relax, breathing exercises to relax. I've tried them all, still a hopeless insomniac...I have pain so it is different for me. You can take up to two benadryl for sleep they give it to old people, it's pretty safe to take. There is Valerian root and melatonin too from the health food store. Good luck.

Drink some decaf tea and read a book for a while-go to bed before you are soooo tired you can't sleep-Im guilty of this too,
try putting a vanilla airfreshner in your room-vanilla is a calming scent. Soak in a hot bath for a few minutes before bedtime. Best thing is put your self on a good schedule-regular bedtime and regular get up time- hope this helps

-Avoid all caffeine after 7pm.
-Excercise more.
-Take a bath. Experts say that the body's natural cool down process after a hot bath makes you sleepy.
-Don't do anything strenous right before bed. Relax by watching TV or reading a book.
-Don't sleep in too late in the morning.
-Don't take naps during the day.
-Go to bed and wake up at the same time each day.
-Make sure your bedroom is really dark and cool.
-Only use your bedroom for sleep and sex. This trains the mind that it's sleepy time.

There are several drugs that can cause this, you need to find out what she it taking and ask your question again. Find the pill bottle, and see what is in it. Ambien (zolpidem) can cause memory problems mostly when you take it, but eventually the memory problems will persist into the daytime. Personalty changes, depression, apathy, etc., are also common with extended usage. Xanax can more-or-less do the same thing, as can other benzos. So find out what she is taking and tell us, and we can give you more specific information.

Take a warm shower
Sip a warm mug of coco
Rack out on the couch/sofa
Put on the most boring movie you have on
...and when you wake the TV will still be on
If you have a TV and DVD play in your bedroom you can rack out on the bed....I always found the couch/sofa worked better for me

It took a long time to realize my reading in bed was robbing me of sleep. So now I do my reading before I go to bed. Also, I abstain from caffeine in any form for five or six hours prior to retiring
