How do you get the symbol ~ ON TOP of a word? Superscript only gets it higher, but doesn't get it ontop of the letter 'n', for example, the word "pina colada", there should be a ~ symbol on top of the 'n', how do you do this using microsoft word??

Specifically for MS Word, do the following.

Hold Ctrl
Press Shift+~
Press n

You can do it anywhere using the following keystrokes.

Alt+0209 (Ñ)
Alt+0241 (ñ)

If you're looking for other special characters, you can find them using the Character Map, which is under Start Menu->Accessories->System Tools->Character Map

There are two ways to do this:

1) Go to the Insert menu, then select "Symbol". A box will pop up on screen, go to where you find the ñ, click it, then click "insert" at the bottom of the box. The symbol will put it there.

2) Hold down the "Alt" key on your keyboard while typing in the numbers 0,2,4,1 in order. When you release the Alt key, you'll see the ñ appear.

Similar "Alt+number sequence" commands will give accent marks over the vowels as well. Test a few out!

It actually isn't a matter of putting the tilde (~) on top of a letter (as opposed to a word), it's actually choosing the right character set. If you go to insert, then symbols and characters, you will see many more characters than are what are on your keyboard. Simply choose the character you want and you're done. Also consider defining characters combinations that you want to use so that, for example, when you type "~n" it changes it to an "en-yay". This is done in the "auto correct" section.

I can't remember where these things are EXACTLY in the menu selections, but search for them in the Word help, and it will show you where.
