All DSL modems are actually bridges and if it's a modem (not a DSL router) then bridge mode is the only mode it will operate in.

If it's a DSL router, you'd use bridge mode if your ISP gave you a block of public IP addresses to use on your network. The router would be configured in bridge mode to allow you to use public IP addresses on all machines on your network.

That's an advanced configuration, however. If you don't know what you're doing, don't mess with it as you might brick your router and will need a network engineer to get you back on line again.

when you are connecting a router to a dsl modem, you usually have to place the modem in bridge mode in order for the dsl internet to pass through the modem and then on to the router. To do this you have to make a few configuration changes in the dsl modem. Who ever your dsl internet company is should be able to tell you how to do this. It is a easier than it sounds.

Simply, I think your PPPoE authentication is done on your pc in bridge mode, vice the modem.

Some ISP's require that you run in bridge mode for your router to work correctly. If you can run without it - do.
