Unless you know exactly what you are getting and the quality of the instrument compared to others, the answer will be no. I've been playing and studying saxophone for over 17 years and I've been lucky with the two that I bought on Ebay, but I knew what I was looking at and what I was buying. If you don't know anything about it, you are most likely to get a cheap horn that you'll spend more money on repairing than you would if you were to go to a music store and buy one from them. Don't buy unless you know exactly what you are looking for.

If you are considering buying a sax on eBay, be an educated consumer. If you want to buy new, find out exactly what you'll be getting. Some of the Chinese saxophones are ok. Others are crap. Do your homework. If you are not sax savvy, get advice from a friend that is and/or read up on models that interest you. If you are buying used, look for sellers that sell a lot of instruments. You're less likely to get burned. Pay with paypal so that you have buyer protection to fall back on should you get stung. A majority of people on eBay are good, honest folk just trying to make a buck. But, it doesn't hurt to protect yourself.

My son, now in his early '50's started with an alto a year or so back and is going well with it. Don't make the same mistake that he did when starting out. Get someone to show you how to deal with the mouthpiece and reed before you try to play a note. Starting off with what could become a bad habit will make your early experiences disappointing. The same goes for getting basic key usage right - when that's done properly you'll enjoy developing your art. As you mention that you play tenor sax, check that your attention to the points mentioned above has been carefully carried out first. If you are even thinking of going for alto because you have problems handling the tenor sax you will not get any better results by changing. Great jazzmen like Benny Carter got it right first time and played both successfully.

I bought one for my son over the summer. $200. The lazy little bum did not open it for 2 months and I was traveling for work. When the school year started we found it was defective. Too late to send it back. We took it to a music store where we were told it was beyond repair andvery poorly made.
eBay has a lot of great stuff and many great sellers. But by all means avoid National Music Supply. Absolute garbage.

Watch out for what they say, it could be completely fake. It just might be a rusty pipe, but everything that I have gotten on eBay has been very accurate to the picture.

I personally would go to a pawn shop to purchase one after I have looked at it--unless you want a new one
