Pandora's box was a literal box, in which the gods had placed all the evils of the world, and had entrusted it to a woman named Pandora, and had not told her what was in it, but had commanded her never to open it. Her curiosity got the best of her, and she peeked in, and all those evils came flying out, and she closed the box just in time to save the one good thing that had been in there, Hope. That story seems weird to me though, because if she didn't let hope out, that seems to say to me that hope shouldn't exist in the world, but according to the teacher I had when I read that story, it means just the opposite.

"According to Edith Hamilton in Mythology the source of all misfortune was Pandora's curiosity. "The gods presented her with a box into which each had put something harmful, and forbade her ever to open it. Then they sent her to Epimetheus, who took her gladly although Prometheus had warned him never to accept anything from Zeus. He took her, and afterward when that dangerous thing, a woman, was his, he understood how good his brother's advice had been. For Pandora, like all women, was possessed of a lively curiosity. She had to know what was in the box. One day she lifted the lidÂand out flew plagues innumerable, sorrow and mischief for mankind. In terror Pandora clapped the lid down, but too late. One good thing, however, was thereÂHope. It was the only good the casket had held among the many evils, and it remains to this day mankind's sole comfort in misfortune."

Pandora was a beautiful woman who was given a box by Zeus. Inside the box contained all the evils of the world: Disease, famine, natural disasters, etc. Strict instructions were given to her that she not open it. But, her curiousity goy the best of her and she opened it and released all the terrible evils in the world. But, also inside was one good thing called hope. So, although the horrible evils were released, hope was also released and that's how humanity survives.

Further to Razors Edge and Jan J, Hope being the only thing that stayed in the box......
It is symbolic of what we have to contend with as humans. Just when we think all is lost, we always have hope, it is always inside us.
