I am replacing my hot water heater tomorrow (gas not electric). I have a wife, and two kids (ages 5 and 1). I'd like to be able to take 2 baths at the same time. How many gallons do I need in my water heater? I'm not being greedy. I don't want 5 baths, a dryer, washing machine, etc..). I just want to be able to take 2 baths at the same time.

The 40 gallon should do it for you unless you fill the tubs and then keep the water running during the bath.

Look into a 50 to 60 gal heater. I build high end houses and recommend the same gallonages to make sure they are happy with their heaters out put performance. Its worth it. Especially if you want to have 2 baths, not just two showers. Figure a 40 gal will fill 1 tub and have a small amount left over. If you are going to want 2 tubs then you might want to go as high as 80 gal. Its really not that abnormal even for smaller houses. But you can always add a second heater and piggyback it to the other later if you find the one you picked is too small. You just have to get another power supply there.

The minimum that I'd purchase in electric would be a 50 gallon. Electric water heaters do not recoup hot water temperatures as fast as gas whater heaters. A 50 might be pushing it too if your shower heads don't have the water saving feature.

50 gallon will give you all you want, 40 gallons will work if one of the baths is lukewarm.
