The German ME-262 was the best fighter in WWII.
My friend was a pilot in the Luftwaffe and he got to fly one a couple of times and was thrilled with it.
He flew mostly combat on the Eastern front, with a stint in France and fought P-51s, P-39 Air Cobras and the usual Russian built fighters.
So, my vote for the best fighter would be the ME-262 the choice of Horst Petzschler Luftwaffe 26 victory Ace.

P-51 Mustang hands down.....for the Axis, the best fighter was the Tiger tank. If only Rommel could have secured the oil fields that Germany would need to actually run those tanks later in the war.
