There are so many great resources available regarding becoming a writer. If you are just beginning, a great book you may want to read is "Writing Down the Bones" by Natalie Goldberg. She includes some great ideas for writing exercises to get you started - as well as other great advice. Most libraries have it.

You also may want to join a writer's group. There are several online. I am a member of http://www.newbie-writers.com where there's a great forum to post your work and get it reviewed or discuss other issues regarding writing.

There is also http://www.absolutewrite.com
http://www.writersdigest.com - this one has a WEALTH of great info and resources.
http://www.fmwriters.com always has free workshops and classes.

There are many, many more if you just keep searching. Good luck!!

Welcome to the writing world! Writing is like any other business, it takes dedication to master the craft, and determination to see a project through. And a certain amount of luck.

First, read everything you can get your hands on in your genre and figure out why some introductions work and some don't. How the author captures your interest. What makes a good scene. How to create charaters that are appealing. Figure out why you like a book then break down how the author made it likeable.

Second, subscribe to a couple writing magazines.

Third, join a writer's group - or a couple of them. Find one where you can sit and talk to other writers in person. That means local. On-line fills a need too. Being in at least one of each is best.

Go to a couple writer's conferences. That's where you can do some face to face networking and meet some incredible people.

Also consider taking some classes either on-line (Writer's Digest and Longridge Writers Group both have good classes - from personal experience - but there are others out there too.)

That'll keep you busy for a couple years - or for the rest of your life if you intend to make a career out of this!

There is so much more to writing than just a story on a page...go to school...there are a ton of great programs at many good schools that will help you learn the craft. Check out Long Ridge Writers Group, I am taking a course with them and am learning that I have a lot to learn before I begin to publish! Good luck.

Including others have mentioned here, check out the tutorials on http://www.storyentertainment.com

For some of the other sites, please be careful about confusing creative writing with storytelling. They are a world apart. I think the tutorials on Story Entertainment effectively show the structure of a story and how to accomplish writing one.
