I ask at the interview WHEN they intend to make a decision [or they volunteer it.]--this lets them know YOU'RE serious and that YOU may have other things to consider, too! Otherwise, yeah, I'd check back in 5-7 days. Write a 'thank you' for the interview immediately. I've hand-delivered the 'thank you' note myself the next day to eliminate any mail snafus.

depends on the company some check alot of applicants references some only check afew if its been more than 2-3 weeks call the company and ask how far along with their decision they are. checking references generally says they think you are qualified on paper but want to know more details during my job search I had over 16 interviews 14 of which checked with references and the 17th interview I was hired on the spot after making me wait in the lobby for ten minutes to check references.

This is a question you need to ask the interviewer at the end of the interview. You could be the first interviewed, and you could be the last.
Know when their decision is to be made, get your letter in beforehand.

After you go on a job interview, you need to write a thank you note. Make yourself stand out in the crowd. Depending on the job anywhere from one day to 2 weeks.

I'd say if you don't hear back form them in a week, call them, just to show you're still interested, say something like "I had a job interview, and I was just calling make to see if I've been considered or not", calling show them your interested.
