You're looking to buy a "flash drive, thumb drive, memory key".

It's a little hard drive that you can carry with you. You stick it in the USB port and if you're running XP, it will automagically recognize it. Go to my computer and you'll see the drive there as the name brand or 'removable drive'.... I always drag the icon to the desktop and create a shortcut to make it easy.

It will hold any files.... pictures, music, files, - anything really that will fit - and any USB memory key (whatever) will work with any XP computer. They will also work with other operating systems but lots of times you need to find the driver from the manufacturer.

Once you double click on the new drive in My computers, it's just dragging and dropping your files or music or pictures onto it and it will work in any other XP computer or computers with the proper driver. You might even put the driver on the thumbdrive in case your going to be wanting to use the USB in an older computer.

Works fine in Macs, and in GNU/Linux computers ( http://pclinuxos.com ) but, in Microsoft Windows, here are the troubles:
1. the cheaper brands, like Lexar truly suck.
2. most are formatted in NTFS, which is bad for losing files, for technical reasons within NTFS.

The Sandisk and Verbatim are really good.

You stick a USB stick into the USB port, and it pops up, unless the formatted system in it has died (NTFS, usually).

512 Mb is like 600 floppies... move anything, copy and take to other computers. music transported from a Mac to a PC running Linux, or BSD, or maybe Microsoft (you never know about that virus magnet!).

usb stick i blv are magnetic just like floppy disk, they have empy slots in them that are encoded in binary numbers (010101 etc.)binary numbers are what computers read, as far as i know they work with all computers that have a usb port in them, and yes their any types of brands, they can be damaged easily if left in the car in the heat, or near a monitor or speaker because of their magnitism.
